Volunteer

At WICC we would hope that a Volunteer or Substitute would assume a role where an individual provides support to childcare staff by interacting with children, assisting with activities, maintaining a safe environment, and fostering a positive and nurturing atmosphere, all while working under the supervision of paid staff and adhering to established childcare guidelines. Key responsibilities by include playing with children, helping with meal times, reading stories, assisting with clean-up, and ensuring children’s safety and well-being.

Key responsibilities may include:

  • Direct child interaction: Engaging with children through play, reading, singing, and age-appropriate activities.

  • Classroom support: Assisting reachers with setting up learning centers, preparing materials, and managing transitions between activities.

  • Supervision and safety: Actively monitoring children to ensure their safety and well-being, reporting any concerns to staff.

  • Basic caregiving tasks: Helping with mealtimes, diaper changes, and hand washing.

  • Clean-up and maintenance: Assisting with tidying up toys, cleaning spills, and maintaining a clean play area.

  • Positive Reinforcement: Providing encouragement and positive feedback to children.

  • Communication: Maintaining open communication with childcare staff regarding children’s needs and any observations.

Desired skills and qualities:

  • Love of children: genuine enthusiasm and positive attitude towards interacting with children of various ages.

  • Patience and flexibility: Ability to remain calm and adapt to changing situations with children.

  • Reliability and punctuality: Commitment to being on time for schedules shifts.

  • Basic childcare knowledge: Understanding of child development stages and appropriate safety practices.

  • Effective communication: Ability to interact with children, parents, and staff clearly and respectfully.

  • Important considerations:

  • Background checks: WICC requires volunteers/substitutes to undergo background checks to ensure child safety.

  • Training: Volunteers/Substitutes may be required to complete training session on child development, safety protocols, and facility policies.

  • Confidentiality: Maintaining privacy regarding children’s information.

Requirements:

Steps 1 through 5 must be completed before your first day with WICC.
